You went through some verbal contortions to avoid naming other IWB manufacturers in this podcast. Looking at how your blog and podcast are structured, I can infer that you must be sponsored by Smart Technologies. In the interests of transparency and in keeping with the theme of media literacy in this episode, do you think you should make some kind of direct disclosure statement of Smart Technologies’s affiliation or sponsorship of this podcast or your roles in creating it?

    Hi Michael,

Thanks for sharing your concerns.I will try to respond as clearly as possible.

First, we do not receive any sponsorship or funds from SMART Technologies to create this podcast. The podcast is paid for from my personal funds. It costs a few thousand dollars per year to produce for website hosting and bandwidth alone. This does not include software, hardware, and our time.

Second, if we ever receive sponsorship from ANY company we will declare it upfront on the podcast and webpage.

Third, our affiliation with SMART currently is through their recognition of our work. Joan and I have been recognized as SMART Exemplary Educators, Peer Educators, Tradeshow Teachers by SMART Technologies. There has never been an employment relationship between SMART, Joan, and I. We have also been recognized by Microsoft as well.

Fourth, we aren’t trying ‘to avoid naming other IWB manufacturers’. We have talked about the other big IWB manufacturer: Promethean. However their software isn’t free and we have limited resources available. We also believe that collaboration grows the more people use the same free standard. Until there is an open source solution, SMART Notebook is (in our opinion) the best solution currently available.

Finally in this very competitive world, we actually are practicing what we preach. The more we share, the more we know. Joan and I are volunteering our time (and some money) to create an online learning community.

If you have a lesson to share, Michael. Please let us know, it would be excellent to chat!

    Ben

I enjoyed Joan’s lessons. I create commercials with my second graders to address a California language arts standard. The actual movie making follows a two week unit of examining cereal boxes and talking about persuasion and gimmicks. Then they create their own cereal boxes and talk about techniques they’re using. Then they make commercials. iMovie is so easy that even the second graders could do it. I just got a SMARTBoard so I look forward to using that in connection with our commercials and I thank you for the links which add another support. Here are out commercials:
