Howdy, again! Just listened to the episode featuring a lesson on note making. I have my third graders take notes but really want to raise the bar on my instruction via the points raised in this lesson. I’m interested in knowing more about listener/commenter James Sigler’s adaptations/experiences with adapting the note making lesson for his 3rd grade class. James…how can we connect?

Carol,
I haven’t actually done any more yet with notetaking since I listened to Ben and Joan’s podcast on notetaking. However, what I have done before involves highlighting/underlining. After we read the questions following a reading passage, we look back in the passage and highlight where we found our answer. Yellow and pink markers work well if a student doesn’t have a highlighter. If nothing else, they can underline. We use it with our Scholastic News every week. We also highlight the definitions of vocabulary words. They are not allowed highlighters during our state assessment, but they can underline answers in the story that are on the test. I would love to connect with another 3rd grade teacher. You can contact me on my blog What is School 2.0?. My gmail address is in the very bottom right corner (It’s a long scroll down).
